How Should We Understand God’s Changing Instructions Through the Bible?

Reading through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, one thing becomes clear: God’s instructions to humanity are not always the same. At one point, Noah is told to build an ark. Later, Moses receives the Law at Sinai. Still later, Jesus preaches grace and the coming Kingdom of God. This naturally raises a thoughtful question for many believers: Why do God’s instructions seem to change? And how should we understand these shifts?

Same God, Different Responsibilities

First, it’s important to affirm that God Himself never changes (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). His nature, character, and purpose remain consistent throughout all of history. But within His unchanging plan, He gives different responsibilities to people at different times. For instance:

  • Adam and Eve were commanded not to eat from a specific tree—an instruction that doesn’t apply to anyone else today.

  • Noah was told to build an ark and gather animals—again, a unique command for a unique time.

  • Israel was given the Law with detailed regulations for worship, diet, and daily life.

  • The Church is now called to live by grace through faith, not under the Mosaic Law.

These examples show that God communicates instructions that fit the time, people, and purpose within His larger redemptive plan.

Progressive Revelation

One helpful concept is “progressive revelation.” This means that God didn’t reveal His full plan all at once but unfolded it gradually. As history moved forward, God revealed more of His will and purpose—culminating in the coming of Jesus Christ and the New Covenant.

What once was appropriate—like offering animal sacrifices—is no longer needed because Christ became the final sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10). The shift isn’t a contradiction; it’s fulfillment.

Context Is Key

Understanding these changes helps us read the Bible in context. For example:

  • Commands given to Israel about temple worship were for a specific covenant community.

  • Jesus’ instructions to His disciples were often rooted in their cultural and prophetic moment.

  • Paul’s letters to the early Church reflect how believers should live after Christ’s resurrection and ascension.

Recognizing these distinctions doesn’t weaken Scripture—it strengthens our ability to rightly interpret and apply it.

One Story, Many Stages

While God’s instructions may differ across time, they all point to one overarching story: redemption through Jesus Christ. Each stage in the story reveals more of who God is, what He desires, and how we’re called to respond.

For readers interested in exploring how these shifts unfold across biblical history, Seven Dispensations: Examining God’s Dealings With Mankind Through Seven Time Periods offers a clear framework grounded in Scripture. It’s a helpful resource for anyone who wants to better understand the unity and unfolding of God’s Word.
