Preaching a full sermon on the topic of “Salt of Heaven” was an amazing experience. I was reading a devotional by one of my favorite Bible teachers and spiritual mentors, Brother Keith, the author of Rising Son. He mentioned the idea of Jesus being the Salt of Heaven in his devotional, and the moment I heard this name, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about this idea.
While researching, I was referred to a well-known Scripture, Mark 9:49-50:
“Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”
It seemed strange to me that fire could produce salt, but upon reflection, I realized it might refer to something spiritual. In nature, salt is typically obtained from seawater, but we can’t consume that salt directly. Salt from the sea has nutritional value, but Jesus was talking about a different kind of salt. Spiritually, believers know that fire represents the Word of God and that God is a consuming fire. He must have been referring to how every believer must be salted with fire, or in other words, with the Word of God. The Word of God gives our lives a unique taste and flavor of Heaven. In the Old Testament, God commanded Moses and the nation of Israel to use salt in all grain offerings:
“Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that the salt of the covenant of your God shall not be lacking from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt” (Leviticus 2:13).
Salt also represents a covenant between God and His people. Additionally, salt is a dominant spice among all spices. You can use chili peppers and other spices, but without salt, the flavor of those spices won’t be enhanced. Similarly, believers’ faith in the Word of God represents their trust in Him, which can lead to receiving other gifts of the Spirit.
Last week, I traveled to the village where my grandmother was born. I asked my uncle to show me the place of her birth and to tell me more about her father’s life. I wanted to understand the taste of my grandmother’s lifestyle and her faithfulness to God.
When we read 2 Timothy 1:5, it says, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”
Salt is symbolic of our faith in God. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God, and whoever is salted with fire that is, whoever believes in Jesus will experience the unique flavor of eternal life. We all share in the salt of Heaven, and His name is Jesus, our Salt of Heaven. Brother Keith has been considering writing a book about this topic, and maybe we could collaborate on it someday.
