The Greatest of These is Love: Understanding God’s Unchanging Love

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13

Love is one of the most profound and powerful forces in the world, yet human love is often fragile. It can be manipulated, distorted, and shaken by offense, betrayal, and hardship. Too often, we experience love based on emotions—familiar, needy, and conditional. But the love that God gives us is completely different. His love is not fleeting or based on human standards; it is eternal, unshakable, and life-changing.

The Difference Between Human Love and God’s Love

The enemy loves to twist our understanding of love, using it to manipulate our emotions and distract us from the truth of God’s Word. We see this in how the world encourages us to compromise—how love is often used as an excuse to tolerate sin or remain in unhealthy relationships. But the love of God is pure, holy, and focused on our value in His eyes—not our mistakes or weaknesses.

God’s love is not fickle. It does not keep a record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5). It does not waver when we fail. Instead, it honors us, restores us, and invites us into the marvelous gift of new creation life through Jesus Christ.

Love that Transforms

God’s love propelled Him to set the greatest rescue plan in motion. Through Jesus, He took our place, crucified our sinful nature, and gave us the gift of new life. This love calls us to step into our identity as new creations in Christ—no longer bound by the past, but empowered to live in victory.

However, deception is always lurking. Many believers have been taught that they are still “rotten sinners” even after salvation. This lie steals the power and authority that Jesus restored to us. The enemy wants us to remain in guilt and shame, constantly begging for forgiveness instead of fully embracing the finished work of Christ.

But here’s the truth: Our old self was crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20). We are no longer sinners trying to be good—we are new creations, set apart and empowered by His Spirit. Instead of rehabilitating an old, sinful heart, we are called to walk boldly in our new identity as beloved children of God.

Loving Yourself as God Loves You

Jesus made it clear that the greatest commandments are to:

  1. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
  2. Love your neighbor as yourself.

But here’s the key—we can’t truly love others until we first love ourselves as God loves us.

This doesn’t mean loving a fallen, sinful nature. It means loving the new creation that God has made us to be. When we accept His love and see ourselves as He sees us—redeemed, righteous, and made whole—we can then pour out that same love to others.

God has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12). He keeps no record of wrongs. He has given us His Spirit so that we can walk in power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Through Christ, we have the authority to tear down strongholds, walk in freedom, and lead others to the truth.

Love: The Greatest Gift

Everything in this world—knowledge, science, human reasoning—will eventually pass away. But love will never fail (1 Corinthians 13:8). Love is the most powerful gift we have, and it must be cherished, nurtured, and shared.

Today, let’s make a conscious decision to fully agree with the truth of God’s love. Let’s love ourselves as He loves us, so that we can freely love others—without expectation, without fear, and without limits.

A Prayer for Today

Father, I am so grateful for Your amazing and powerful love. Thank You for giving me a Spirit of love, power, and a sound mind. I am a new creation in Christ, and I refuse to believe the lie that I am still a sinner. I take every thought captive that says I am unworthy and replace it with Your truth—that You have removed my sins and made me righteous. I choose to love myself as You love me so that I can love others freely. Thank You for rescuing me and setting me free. I love You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
