Christmas is the busiest and most hectic season of the year. Many Christians get caught up in decorating their homes, setting up Christmas trees, and preparing for church events. In the hustle, it’s easy to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. The real meaning is about sharing love, caring for others, and fulfilling God’s commandment to “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). The Christmas season gives us a special opportunity to reflect Christ’s love in our lives. Jesus set the perfect example of how to treat even those who persecute us.
As children of God, we are called to be examples of Christ’s love. Let’s explore how we can celebrate Christmas in a way that honors Him.
Christmas Isn’t About Wearing Fancy Clothes
While it’s fine to buy new clothes, they shouldn’t be the main focus of Christmas. Remember, God doesn’t look at our outward appearance when we come to Him. Instead, we can demonstrate God’s mercy through our actions by helping fellow Christians who might be struggling. Christ’s love means putting others before ourselves. We must be willing to sacrifice our own needs to serve others, as this is a true reflection of knowing Jesus.
Throughout my life, I’ve seen many people who believe buying new clothes is essential to celebrating Christmas, and if they don’t, they feel they’re missing out on the joy of the season. However, Christmas isn’t about material things. It’s about focusing on reflecting God’s love in our celebrations.
Be a Giver
The Bible teaches that “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35), and we should give with a cheerful heart, for that’s how we receive blessings from God. God gave Jesus as a gift to the world, proving His love for us. When we give to others, we reflect that same love. Giving helps build strong relationships in our churches and families, and others will see Christ’s love through our actions.
The joy of giving is shared by both the giver and the recipient. Christmas offers a unique opportunity to bless others, and through giving, we understand the true meaning of the season—a lesson that’s important for every believer. By being generous, we set a positive example for future generations and our children.
Share the Word
As the Christmas season begins, it’s a wonderful time to share the Gospel and teach others the true meaning of Christmas. You can invite friends, family, or fellow believers to a meal and share how we can reflect Christ’s love. This will make them feel valued and cared for. You could also organize a special activity, such as reading Christmas scriptures aloud, like Luke 2:10-14, John 3:16, and Isaiah 9:6. This helps remind everyone of the true significance of Christmas.
