From Where Did 1 Corinthians 13 Come?

1 Corinthians 13 refers to the 13th chapter in the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. This was written by Paul as a message to early Christians in that area. At the time of writing, around 53-55 A.D., fellow Christians were divided, quarreling with each other and splitting off into smaller factions. It was Paul’s duty to unite the broad community of Christians and reignite their belief in the one, true God. Paul did so by convincing members of the church of the reality of Jesus’ resurrection. He speaks at length in 1 Corinthians on the resurrection being the very foundation of the Christian faith.

Paul also solidifies his role as a prominent leader in the church by addressing the sinful behavior of many Christians at the time. Paul was adamant that Christians should give up their lives of sin to follow the ways Jesus had preached. Paul discouraged the worshipping of idols and many different kinds of sinful behavior in this chapter.

1 Corinthians 13 Is About Love

Overall, though, what has come to the forefront from 1 Corinthians is most often the verses about love. It’s a moving collection of verses that has inspired countless families to look to God for the blueprint to eternal life and love through God the Father.

You may have heard this chapter read out in church, or perhaps you have read it at home during your scripture readings. One particularly well-known portion of the chapter reads:

“Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast. I am not proud. It does not dishonor others. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hope, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:7, NIV

This may be the kind of reminder you need during the day to calm yourself, be more patient or check your anger. Life can be challenging sometimes and reading scripture in a moment of difficulty can be helpful, not to mention soothing.

This verse could be referring to God’s love. As the verse says, God’s love “always perseveres” meaning it is an all-encompassing, divine love.

The chapter also reminds us that love is the truest, most pure virtue. It reads:

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1, NIV

This part of the chapter shows us that love should be valued above petty talents, such as charisma, intelligence or strength. Instead, Christians should strive to be loving to their neighbors as the commandments say and to never boast or be proud.

To sum up the sentiments of the chapter, the final verse gives us three virtues we, as Christians, should try to exhibit in our daily lives.

“And now these three remain faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13, NIV

You will be reminded of faith, hope, and the power of love each time you lay your eyes on this scripture. Overall, Christian Walls create some beautiful art for your home. The company offers a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee and also offers free shipping to those in the United States.
